We collaborate to promote sustainable development beyond our own doors

Being an international company, we believe that it is our obligation to promote responsible business practices beyond our own operations. Together with our approximately 16,500 suppliers and trading partners, we have a responsibility to ensure the well-being of the people and communities we procure from. The dormakaba Supplier Code of Conduct (SCoC) outlines our requirements with regard to human rights, fair working conditions, environmental responsibility and business ethics, among others. 

To monitor our suppliers’ sustainability performance, dormakaba periodically runs on-site audits and off-site assessments for suppliers considered high-risk. This high-risk group includes approximately 13% of our Tier 1 supplier base. Since the launch of our collaboration with EcoVadis in 2019, 23.7% of the high-risk suppliers have been assessed, as part of our Supplier Engagement Program.

Responsible minerals sourcing

We are committed to proactively establishing a responsible supply chain management of minerals, which may originate from conflict-affected and high-risk areas. As we are far removed from the extraction of minerals in the value chain, and we do not directly purchase or import raw ore or unrefined minerals, we rely on the collaboration with our supplier base. In fact, such collaboration is key to identify and manage the risks associated with potential links to conflict-affected or high-risk areas by the actors in the upstream supply chain, that are involved in mineral extraction, processing or transport. The dormakaba Statement of Commitment on Responsible Minerals Sourcing aims to provide dormakaba entities with a framework that is necessary to source minerals responsibly, while creating the enabling conditions for constructive engagement with suppliers.

We support and respect human rights for all people as outlined in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the dormakaba Statement of Commitment on Human Rights. Our commitment to respect human rights extends to all individuals throughout the value chain, and we use the relationships with co-manufacturers, independent suppliers, and other business partners to encourage and promote the principles of the Statement of Commitment on Human Rights throughout our network. 

We are fully committed to upholding the principles of and adherence to international conventions, laws and our internal rules and regulations to eradicate slavery and human trafficking from all areas of life. The dormakaba Modern Slavery and Child Labor Statement sets out the steps we have taken to ensure that modern slavery practices, and in particular child labor and forced labor are not taking place in our supply chains or in any part of our businesses.

United Nations Global Compact initiative

We are proud to be a member of the United Nations Global Compact initiative. This commits us, along with 10,000 other businesses around the world, to ten principles relating to human rights, fair employment conditions, the environment and corruption. dormakaba publishes its annual “Communication on Progress” on the UN Global Compact website.

Cobalt traceability

We are aware that the mining of cobalt is often linked to human rights violations, including child labor, especially when sourced from the Democratic Republic of Congo. As a company, procuring electronic components, we must take action to increase transparency in our supply chain, regarding human rights violations during the mining of high-risk minerals. Therefore, it is our goal to ensure supply chain traceability for minerals having high risk of child labor by 2027.

To gain deeper insight into tracing cobalt in fragmented supply chains, we have commissioned the University of St. Gallen, to develop a study on Cobalt Traceability. By publishing it, we aim to help other corporations to better understand the topic, as creating more transparent and responsible mineral supply chains is possible only with the collective action of many parties. The study includes practical recommendations that can help companies to start addressing this issue.

It is our aim to make access in all places that matters safe, seamless and sustainable. End-user health and safety is therefore an inherent part of our business plans and is fundamental to our sense of product responsibility. By identifying and minimizing all possible risks of our products we ensure the safety of our customers and end users. It is a core principle, that no dormakaba product can be released for production or installed in-field without the appropriate certification in hand.

Public buildings must meet high standards in terms of public health and safety, as well as for our built-in products and solutions. We meet these product and customer requirements with product certifications for internationally recognized standards such as from the European Standard (EN), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), or Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN). We pay particular attention to the DIN 18040 standards, which apply to barrier-free construction in public buildings. Furthermore, ISO 9001 processes ensure that quality management requirements are continuously monitored and improved. In the financial year 2022/23, 49% of our reporting sites had an ISO 9001 certification.
