Climate neutral dormakaba booth at the BAU

In 2023 the focus topic of BAU, the world’s leading trade fair for architecture, building, and systems, was sustainability, highlighting the need for more sustainable solutions in the sector. dormakaba showcased not only its ground-breaking product innovations in the field of sustainability but it was also compensating its entire carbon footprint related to the event.

At the BAU 2023, dormakaba had a dedicated corner for sustainability, where visitors could learn about its initiatives related to a circular economy, energy efficiency, or sustainable supply chain management, among others. dormakaba presented ground-breaking product innovations in the field of sustainability, such as an intelligent system for automatic doors, that significantly contribute to improving the energy balance of the building, reduce operating costs, and ensures greater safety during operation. Furthermore, the company’s brand-new consultative sales service, the Door Efficiency Calculator, also debuted in front of the public, which helps customers find the most suitable automatic doors for their buildings regarding energy efficiency, costs, and CO2 footprint.

Besides these, the dormakaba booth hosted an exclusive event together with IBU (Institut Bauen und Umwelt), an association of building product manufacturers and dormakaba’s partner in developing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). Furthermore, the dormakaba booth was part of the German Sustainable Building Council’s (DGNB) tour that was based on the motto “Construction 2030 - sustainable, climate-positive and circular”.

Thinking consciously, dormakaba’s presence at the BAU 2023 was climate neutral, meaning the company was compensating its entire CO2 emissions related to the event. Its carbon footprint was calculated from the emissions related to the materials used for the booth, their transportation, the travel of the dormakaba staff, their accommodations, catering, giveaways and the waste produced during the BAU. About 70% of its footprint was related to the transportation of materials for the dormakaba booth.

For compensation, dormakaba has partnered with myclimate, a Switzerland-based non-profit. Based on the calculated emissions, myclimate supports carbon offset projects in developing and emerging countries, which meet the highest standards (i.e. Gold Standard) and contribute to the UN SDGs (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals). Therefore, they not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also contribute to social, ecological and economic development in the project region.

dormakaba set Group-wide emissions reduction targets, including decreasing operational emissions by 42% until 2030, which has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. The company is well on track to achieving these goals to contribute to a low-carbon economy. The climate-neutral fair booth was an initiative in addition to dormakaba's ongoing strategic measures to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
