Rümlang, 7 October 2026 — The German Design Council has been shaping the design landscape in Germany since 1953. The ICONIC AWARDS annually honor groundbreaking achievements in architecture, product design, and communication. At the 2026 awards ceremony, the eGate Argus Air XS and two film portraits by dormakaba were honored with the ICONIC AWARDS.
Argus Air XS won in the “Product – Building Facility” category. With its ultra-compact design, Argus Air XS delivers the functionality and proven reliability of Argus Air airport sensor gates even in the smallest spaces. It supports the entire passenger flow, from the boarding pass check through lounge access and boarding.
“We are delighted to receive the ICONIC AWARD 2026. With Argus Air XS, we combine the highest security standards, intelligent sensor technology, and an exceptionally compact design. The solution enables a fast, comfortable, and secure flow of passengers even in the tightest of spaces and sets new standards for modern airport infrastructure,” says Bernhard Heitz, Head of Strategic Product Design at dormakaba.
The two film portraits were recognized for outstanding storytelling in the “B2B Communication” category. The film about internationally renowned architect Sara Klomps showcases her work on the iconic The Henderson building in Hong Kong as well as the role dormakaba’s access solutions play in supporting her vision of an open, seamless, and touchless building. The portrait of brothers Hans Ulrik and Tor Kjetil tells the story of the Sorrisniva vacation resort in Alta, Norway, and the world’s northernmost ice hotel. As part of a pilot project, dormakaba is testing access solutions there under extreme Arctic conditions, including the world’s first automatic sliding door integrated directly into the structure of the ice hotel.
“Together with Sara Klomps, Hans Ulrik, and Tor Kjetil, we are thrilled about this award. The award-winning films show how people bring their visions to life and how dormakaba contributes to that. At the same time, they illustrate our corporate purpose: to provide people worldwide with secure and seamless access to the places that matter to them,” says Patrick Lehn, dormakaba’s corporate spokesperson, who led the film projects.
Bernhard Heitz and Patrick Lehn accepted the awards at the ceremony on 6 October 2026, in Munich.
