Sustainability-related Product Declarations and Certifications

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a widely used industry standard, developed in accordance with international standards ISO 14025, 14040, 14044, and the European Norm EN 15804. EPDs create transparency along the entire life cycle of a product. With an EPD, the environmental impacts at the product or product group level can be documented. As part of our commitment to contributing to greener buildings, we became members of the Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V. (IBU) in 2010, which is our partner in creating EPDs. EPDs are available for the following dormakaba products:

A Health Product Declaration (HPD) provides a detailed disclosure of the chemicals of particular concern that are present in the products and outlines the potential health hazards of materials. This standard offers a coherent reporting format, in which quality and availability of products and health information is assessed. HPDs are also recognized by LEED. A part of our product portfolio is assessed by Byggvarubedömningen, a non-profit business association, established by Sweden’s major property owners and building contractors. In the assessment, the products are examined with regard to their chemical ingredients and life cycle aspects based on Byggvarubedömningen's criteria. The criteria are developed by a group of expert representatives from the member companies. All products are assessed based on their full chemical content at the time of delivery, and their potential environmental impacts are evaluated in terms of their whole life cycle. With assessed products, dormakaba provides Building Product Declarations (BPD) and helps customers to make sustainable product choices. Below are the products evaluated by Byggvarubedömningen:

In order to provide environmental data and fulfill the requirements of various building certification systems, such as DGNB, BNB, LEED and BREEAM, dormakaba offers SuPIM (Sustainable Products Information Module) data sheets. SuPIM is IBU's product information system that can be used to create these data sheets. SuPIM data sheets are a compilation of all certification-relevant product data including verification documents. For quality assurance purposes, the dormakaba data sheets are checked by the IBU and marked accordingly. SuPIM data sheets are available for the following dormakaba products:

A recycled content certificate verifies that a product contains a certain amount of recycled materials. This type of certification is often used in the context of product sustainability, as using recycled materials can help reduce the demand for virgin resources and decrease the environmental impact of manufacturing. A recycled content certificate typically specifies the percentage of recycled materials used in the product.

An indoor air quality certificate verifies that a product meets certain standards for the emission of VOCs (volatile organic compounds). VOCs are chemicals that evaporate easily at room temperature and can have negative health and environmental effects. Such a certificate typically specifies the amount of VOCs emitted by a product, as well as any other relevant information about the product's compliance with VOC standards. VOC certificates are often required in order to prove that a product is safe and meets certain standards for VOC emissions.

The FSC's stated mission is to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world's forests. It claims that forests managed to its standards offer benefits to both local and wider communities, and these are said to include cleaner air and water.
